Early birds are now delivering groceries

It’s a well-known fact that the early bird catches the worm – and this is proving to be true for more than just the odd starling or two in suburban Britain.  While our Victorian ancestors were familiar with the concept of ‘home delivery’ services when it came to fruit delivery and groceries, it’s something that our streets have seen less of in recent years.  Until, that is, the arrival of the supermarket delivery service.  But online groceries are not just available from the supermarkets and some near-extinct residents of our streets are returning with early morning attitude to stop the erosion of their traditional businesses.

Delivery charges

While many supermarkets have been able to offer great deals for those of us looking to delete the ‘big shop’ from our weekly or monthly list of chores, they are less able to help us out when it comes to the ‘little shops’.  All of those trips during lunch or after work to stock up on essential daily items like tea, coffee, milk, bread – well, you probably know yourself that the list goes on.  For small shops the supermarkets offer a high delivery charge, which makes the idea impracticable.  For older people or those on low incomes, perhaps the ones who would most benefit from ‘small delivery services’, the cost of delivery itself is prohibitive.

Or not!

But, this is where our knight on a shining milk float comes in.  A number of dairies now offer groceries as part of their delivery services.  And it has to be said that this delivery service is probably the original and the best.  Early morning delivery has always been a feature of the service and delivery charges are not usually included.  The dairies operate specific rounds which each driver sticks too.  This means that delivery comes as standard alongside that very early slot.  The single order item has long been the staple offering from your average milkman – joined of course these days by milkwomen.

Fruit Basket

In addition to the humble pint there are a range of products that many can now deliver.  General everyday groceries, veg, fruit baskets, milk (of course), a range of dairy and even household cleaners and loo roll.  All of the things that we run out of unexpectedly and need to find time to fit into the day are on the list. The services are flexible and allow one off or regular orders and you can change your order up to nine pm.  The early bird may catch the worm, but it seems that the milkman catches – and delivers – just about everything else!

It has long been known that the early bird catches the worm, if the cat doesn’t catch the bird first.  Another early riser can now be found offering a new take on online groceries shopping.
